Ever wondered what happens if you and another student score exactly the same in the NEET exam? This year, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has some important updates on how ties will be broken for NEET 2024. Let’s break it down for you in a simple way!
What’s Changed?
Previously, if multiple students scored the same marks, the NTA used a computer-generated random draw (like a lottery) to determine their rank. This year, the lucky draw is out!
New Tie-Breaking Criteria:
Here’s the new process for breaking ties in NEET 2024, based on the NTA notification:
- Biology Matters Most: If you score the same total marks as someone else, the one with higher marks in Biology (Zoology and Botany combined) will be ranked higher. Biology forms the foundation of medical studies, so this makes sense!
- Chemistry is Next: If the tie persists after Biology, the candidate with higher marks in Chemistry will be ranked higher.
- Physics Gets a Turn: Still tied? Then the one with higher marks in Physics will be ranked higher.
Why the Change?
With NEET applications soaring (over 25 lakh applicants expected this year!), competition for medical seats is fierce (around 80,000!). The new system aims for a more meritocratic ranking, prioritizing subject-specific knowledge relevant to medical studies.
What This Means for You:
Focus on mastering all three subjects – Biology, Chemistry, and Physics – in your NEET preparation. While Biology carries more weight now, a strong foundation in all three is crucial for a good rank.
